Effective from August 26, Australian employees have the right to disconnect from work outside of office hours, thanks to a new "right to disconnect" law, which empowers workers to ignore work-related emails, calls, and texts after hours without facing any penalties.
Supporters of the law believe it will encourage employers to respect employees' personal time, reducing stress and promoting a healthier work-life balance. An advertising professional, praised the law, stating, "It's really important to have these protections. We spend so much time connected to our phones and emails. It's hard to switch off as it is."
Some groups have expressed dismay over the law, they mentioned that “Our employment laws need to incentivise getting more people into work rather than creating more red tape to hiring people.”
