The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. This festival is to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan，an upright and honest poet and statesman but because of the misdeeds of jealous rivals he eventually fell into disfavor in the emperor's court, finally committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.

Nowadays, people eat Zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fish and prevent the fish from eating the poet's body) and race dragon boats in memory of Qu Yuan's dramatic death.
